Universal HALO
The Universal HALO is a lightweight headband that is designed to count the number, record the location, and measure the severity of each impact that an individual takes to the head during any helmeted or non-helmeted sport.
The software that will be utilized by the HALO will record impact data wirelessly to a server, share the data with appropriate parties (coaches, physicians, parents, researchers, etc.) via the cloud, and analyze this data in conjunction with a variety of data points (such as the individual's age, diet, ethnicity, weight, height, etc.).
How the HALO can help:
1.
The HALO will not only help protect the developing brains of our youth—it will also be an indispensible tool in collecting much-needed data from each wearer that would otherwise go unrecorded. This data is invaluable on-the-spot, but it can also be further implemented in head trauma research.
2.
Recent studies have shown that Chronic Traumatic Encephalpoathy (CTE) is not caused by concussionary impacts, but rather by multiple impacts or even a single impact that is not recognized or classified as concussionary. Because the HALO is recording and measuring all impacts rather than looking solely for "concussionary strikes," it has the potential to highlight CTE cases that would be overlooked in a human-conducted physical exam, especially for impacts that wouldn't typically be considered concussionary by an exam.
3.
The HALO was initially designed for adolescents and young adults playing contact sports or soccer from ages 8 to 18 but was redesigned to also function for children and adults with brain disorders who strike their heads against walls or floors from frustration or for comfort. This added functionality can track the frequency and location of strikes to help monitor changes in brain function and to verify which areas are consistently struck.
FAQs

Q. Is the Universal HALO utilized only for sports?
A. No, the Universal HALO will be used by neurologists and head trauma experts with patients who may strike their heads on walls or floors. The Universal HALO will be worn along with helmet safety equipment to help determine patterns, areas consistently struck, the number of times struck, as well as severity of impacts from gentle to severe over any designated time periods. This data will greatly aid in understanding and possibly curing certain neurological disorders.
Q. Are there any products similar to the Universal HALO readily available to purchase.
A. Yes. Although there are products on the market, the Universal HALO will be the only headband design product created for not only comfort but for easy wear and storage.
Q. How many Universal HALO devices can be used on a playing field at once?
A. Countless Universal HALOs can be used at once, as each device operates on its own Bluetooth signal.
Q. How will I keep track of all the data received by my Universal HALO?
A. Each Universal HALO will have the capability for data to be loaded to each wearer’s profile in real time with each impact to be viewed online. The data will also be able to be manually downloaded as well.
